General Questions

Is it illegal to trigger the left hand advance signal by stopping over the sensor if your the only car in that lane to turn left?

Canada
No, there's nothing illegal about positioning your vehicle over the sensor to activate an advance green, provided you're legally in the left-turn lane and stopped behind the stop line. Many intersections use sensors embedded in the pavement or cameras to detect vehicles waiting to turn. These systems help determine whether an advance green is needed. In fact, that's exactly what the sensors are there for! Even if you're the only vehicle waiting to turn left, you can trigger the signal. The important thing is that you don't cross the stop line, obstruct other traffic, or make an illegal manoeuvre to activate the sensor. Keep in mind that not every intersection works the same way. Some advance greens are activated by vehicle detection, while others operate on timers or traffic patterns.
